Set yourself up for a strong, safe, and rewarding practice — every time you step into the studio. Whether you’re brand new or a seasoned yogi, these simple tips will help you make the most of your experience, stay consistent, and feel your best on and off the mat.
The most important water you drink is before class — not during! Water takes about 20 minutes to hydrate you, so sipping during class mostly just fills your stomach. Stay hydrated throughout the day for your best practice.
Avoid heavy meals at least 3 hours before class. A light option like a green juice or banana is best. Too much food (like too much water) can leave you feeling full and sluggish — eat smart before class so you can feel great after!
Listen to the teacher’s instructions. They are there to serve you, and describe all the way to the full expression of the pose or movement. Go as far you can comfortably, always listening to your body. Moving into your own variations and resisting trying it the right way prolongs your learning curve and progress.
The heat helps your body stretch deeper and eases tension in joints, making your practice smoother and safer. If it ever feels overwhelming, sit down with your head above your heart and eyes open. Breathe calmly through your nose — your body will rebalance, and you can rejoin when ready.
Finish with a nice long savasana and let your body cool down gradually, allowing your central nervous system to calm down and gain maximum benefit from class. Then when you leave you will be refreshed and re energized for the rest of your day.
Take care of yourself today so that you can come back tomorrow. Try to come back as soon as possible to prevent soreness in your muscles and show your mind how strong your body is. Challenge yourself to 10 classes in your first month. The frequency, persistent and intensity in which you practice is key to your success.
